When you first fire it up, you'll see a Router screen that shows the router and any connected nodes, the name of your ISP, a Speed Test button, and the latest upload and download speeds.

While the front-panel controls are cool, you'll get more settings options using the AmpliFi mobile app for iOS and Android devices. A Settings button lets you adjust the display and LED ring brightness and see how fast the internal fan is spinning. Tap them to open a screen with total uptime and WAN, LAN, and MAC addresses for the router.
At the bottom of the screen are temperature, CPU usage, and memory usage stats. The router's touch-screen control panel shows lots of information such as the date and time, current internet upload and download speeds, network traffic activity, connected Wi-Fi clients, and a Wi-Fi Experience rating based on signal strength. It's powered by a 2.2GHz quad-core CPU and supports 160MHz channel bandwidth, beamforming, OFDMA transmissions, and MU-MIMO data streaming, but does not support WPA3 encryption. The AmpliFi Alien kit is a tri-band Wi-Fi 6 system that can reach speeds of up to 1,148Mbps on the 2.4GHz band, up to 1,733Mbps on one 5GHz band, and up to 4,804Mbps on the other 5GHz band. Neither component supports USB connectivity. The router base contains a 1Gbps WAN port, a power port, and a reset button, while the MeshPoint base has a 1Gbps LAN port that supports Ethernet backhaul, a power jack, and a reset button. But they are easy to tell apart, as the front of the router node sports a 4.7-inch (diagonal) color touch panel and has four 1Gbps LAN ports around back.īoth components have an LED ring around the base that glows green when everything is connected and working properly. The cylinder-shaped router and satellite have a matte black finish, stand 9.8 inches tall, and are 4.3 inches wide.
The Alien Router and MeshPoint system comes with a router node and a satellite node which combine to provide up to 6,000 square feet of Wi-Fi 6 coverage. If you can live without the cool touch controls, you'll get slightly better performance, HomeShield parental control and security software, and multi-gig connectivity from our $399.99 Editors' Choice pick, the TP-Link Deco X4300 Pro. That said, you still don't get any network security tools with this costly system its parental controls are meager and its four LAN ports are limited to Gigabit Ethernet speeds. The new AmpliFi Alien Router and MeshPoint kit ($699) also offers an onboard touch screen, but more important, it showed strong Wi-Fi 6 performance from both nodes in our throughput tests. When we reviewed Ubiquiti Networks' AmpliFi Mesh Wi-Fi System Gamer's Edition back in 2019, we were impressed with the Wi-Fi 5 router's performance and its unique touch-screen control panel, but weren't thrilled with the satellite node's performance and the system's lack of robust parental controls and network security software. It's not easy to stand out in current crowd of mesh network systems.
